My Students

My students are learning advanced mathematics and need to SEE what they are doing when they manipulate mathematical equations explaining the change in populations, current, charge, etc. With a computer in the classroom, we could see demonstrations of these changes.

My students come from good and supportive families.

They have a good work ethic and a desire to succeed...which gives them the potential to really be competitive in the college classroom with a deep understanding of the workings of mathematics. Although they may not all end up in engineering, the understanding they receive when working with and manipulating mathematical models will give them problem solving skills that will benefit them their entire lives. These students are curious and I bring many questions to the classroom that they want answers to - including what effects certain levels of energy have on magnitudes of earthquakes, the weight a single point of interest rate will have on retirement, etc. But, we're doing all this by hand on the white board and wasting precious time in class while a few moments on a graphing calculator emulator could provide the demonstration in a fraction of the time, be more precise, allow for MORE opportunities for answering more questions.

My Project

I'm requesting a computer for my classroom so I can run an emulator. I already have a projector, but my computer broke. I have access to graphing calculator emulator software that would allow me to make these demonstrations. My students have graphing calculators that they could use much more fully had I the opportunity to demonstrate their functionality.

This project is important so they kids can SEE what the math is doing that they are learning.

In mathematics we represent statistical data and bivariate data of many kinds to model the world around us. We have models that represent earthquakes, population growth and decay, logistical growth, etc. These graphs allow the students to finally interpret what they are doing into something that has meaning for them.
