Understanding Theme Through Earthquake Terror

Help me give my students a set of the book Earthquake Terror to dive deeper into their learning about theme and character development and to develop a deeper understanding of cause-and-effect writing.

My Project

The students in fifth grade at my school have reached a point where they crave a novel to dive into, allowing their minds to get lost in the figurative language, the cause-and-effect way of writing, and looking at how character interactions can tell the reader more than just what is seen in that moment. Getting a set of the book Earthquake Terror will allow my students to have the opportunity for high quality learning while also enjoying a thrilling story about a family handling a natural disaster.

My goal for this project is to use the novel as a way to get out of using the typical anthology and get more involved with reading a full novel with their classmates.

Finding the theme of a story is always a difficult task, but, with a novel, there is time to process multiple themes and support their thinking with plentiful evidence.
