Understanding the Power of People

My students need more materials, such as a listening center, a set of Biography CD Read-Alongs and Biography Comprehension Cards, to explore biographies and the importance of making a difference in our world.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I have a dream," Martin Luther King Jr. said, and my students are so invested in learning about the people that shaped our history. We are learning ways to make a difference in our world and also learning to celebrate those that have already made a difference.

Working in an inclusion New York City public school classroom, students are in need of a larger range of biographies to go along with our unit of study.

My students are so excited about learning about people that were important in history and I want to continue making them excited about nonfiction books. Our goal for the upcoming years is to show our students the importance of nonfiction texts and help them learn to understand and gain information from them. However, we need more books and supplies to help them embrace informational texts. We recently added a new listening center to our classroom, which has been a huge success. Students are becoming more invested in reading because they are able to go to a quiet place and listen to books that they love. However, our headphones and player are outdated and to add these new texts into our classroom we need a new player. These new texts and technology would enhance our Informational Unit and show my students a new love for nonfiction.

My Project

My students will be able to use these resources in the years to come. Not only would we be able to use these books during our Reader's Workshop, but they would also help with our Social Studies curriculum. My students would have a greater understanding of biographies which is something they continue to explore in higher grades. The new CD player and headphones would allow more students to sit in the listening center and enjoy hearing stories on tape. Who knows maybe one of my students will be inspired to be president someday or a role model in our country?

This project is so important to me because I am starting to hear my students think about how they can make a difference in our world by listening to things others have done in the past.

We are constantly referring to these "heroes" as we like to call them in our classroom. With your support, we will be creating more "heroes" day after day.
