Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Be the change you want to see in the world," Mahatma Gandhi said. I want my students to read this quote and apply it to their lives every single day. This is why I have chosen to start our school year with "Uncle Tom's Cabin".

Here is some information about our school population: 90% of our students are first-generation college bound, 80% of our students are economically disadvantaged, and 95% of our students are Hispanic or African American.

Most students enter our school at least one grade level behind in Math and Reading.

My Project

We will start off the school year with "Uncle Tom's Cabin" in order to get a grasp on the injustices that have existed in the past, and currently exist in the present. This will set up a classroom culture in which our students at YPW feel motivated to change the status quo that is sadly still so alive today.

Uncle Tom's Cabin is a high-interest book for 8th graders.

With this novel, I will form books clubs, which will build my students' critical thinking skills. Providing students with a shared text gives them the opportunity to grow as readers and thinkers, while also assisting in promoting a positive classroom culture.
