Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fifth grade teacher in a self-contained classroom who wants to help her students better understand the English language in order to continue to read challenging novels and write for a variety of purposes. I have 32 students and about half of them are English Language Learners. All of my students need dictionaries and thesauruses to help them make sense of the vocabulary used in all areas of the curriculum. In the area of language arts, students read novels that are thought-provoking and interesting to them. As we are reading, students constantly come across words and figurative language that they do not understand. We work on using context clues to help decode some of the meaning. If all else fails, we turn to our trusty dictionaries. We have about ten in the classroom and students are always sharing. If students were each provided with their own dictionaries and thesauruses to use in class, they can investigate the meanings of words they don't understand on a regular basis and at their own need. My students enjoy writing and write for a variety of purposes. We write in science, in math, and in history. We write personal narratives, letters to authors, and even journal entries. Students need a thesaurus to help them expand their vocabulary, communicate their ideas effectively, and take their writing to the next level. Imagine the vocabulary a fifth grade student will start to develop and put to use if he/she had the resources. Readers and writers need the tools necessary to communicate their ideas. I believe that my students are a community of readers and writers. They have the ideas, the creativity, and the motivation to be successful. Please provide them with necessary tools for this success!
