Through the use of movies, books, and cartoons I will capture the students' interest in science and intrigue them to learn more about each concept. I teach grades nine through twelve in all areas of science.
The school setting consists of students from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. Many students come from outlying small communities and from feeder schools that provide marginal educational opportunities in science.
When students enter a high school science class, most look at it as a requirement to complete for graduation. Their spirits have been crushed from the overuse of worksheets, lack of hands-on instruction, and very little real-world applications. There is a need to spark this curiosity and ignite their desire to learn again. This can be accomplished through scientific literacy.
The resources I am requesting comprise a select group of books that help teach science using real-life circumstances and popular culture. The books include topics such as Bart Simpson, Mythbusters, Superheros, villains, humor, and James Bond to convey messages about chemistry, physics, and topics in life science.
As classroom teachers we are charged with the duty of sparking student curiosity in our field of expertise. The lack of student interest in the areas of math and science has continued to decline over the past few years. As a nation, we depend on this interest to compete with other nationalities. Through the use of popular culture, I will help ignite this inquisitiveness again and challenge students to go beyond the walls of the classroom and experience science in the real-world.
