My Students
How can we close the opportunity gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed? Our school is 100% people of color, and many have special needs or are English Language Learners. Our school serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, and autism spectrum disorder. Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. Our community has been historically oppressed and marred by violence. However, in spite of all of these challenges our students are incredibly resilient and excited about learning. They are funny, warm, and a joy to teach. I am proud to work at an incredible school where the faculty and staff give 100% everyday for students - we just need your additional support to meet our students' needs!
My Project
Do you remember how tough it was to get through the Shakespeare drama your high school teacher assigned? Understanding classic literature is still challenging to high school students, and with your donations my students will fortunately be able to have an engaging contemporary experience with the Bard without losing academic rigor! I am asking for a class set of No Fear Shakespeare: Romeo & Juliet so that struggling readers and ELL students can still fully understand the original text.
The donations to my classroom will also help students make connections to Shakespeare by reading modern adaptations of Romeo & Juliet.
There are so many great recent Young Adult modernizations of the text, and I want groups of students to choose which novels they would like to read in literature circles. This will help improve their understanding of the original Shakespeare text, and their speaking, listening, and collaboration skills.
