My Students

My students are passionate about learning French language and culture and understanding the world. They are engaged, insightful critical thinkers. My students have demonstrated resilience as they have endured the challenges of the CoVid19 crisis--in some cases supporting their families through illness and hardship. While aware that they live in a society where they are often judged by their skin color, they have decided to face the future with creativity, insight, and a firm resolve to use their gifts to make a difference and contribute to a society where everyone can flourish and soar.

My Project

My 4th year Advanced Placement French students are ready to read their first authentic novel! To support the AP theme of "Families in Different Societies" I have selected the wonderful, heartwarming novel by Gisèle Pineau, Un papillon dans la cité. It tells the story of inquisitive, sensitive girl raised in Guadeloupe by her grandmother who suddenly finds herself navigating the complex, challenging world of a Paris banlieue.

Students will see themselves in Félicie's story as she navigates changing family relationships and social barriers while bravely exploring new cultures and building new friendships.

They will be moved by her emotional struggles, inspired by her courage, and uplifted by her determination to bring joy and hope to others.
