This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Science can be hard, so let's make it fun! While computer-based technology is great, students also need to touch, move, build, examine, explore, and have fun all at the same time. Thus, my project is focused on teaching DNA, genetics, and heredity through games and other manipulatives.

My students will learn the structure and function of the DNA molecule by assembling it.

They will see and learn how the organization of its components allows it to function, including how it is synthesized and how it can be transcribed. To understand genetics and heredity, students will play probability games using a pair of dice, different color chips, and markers to chart their findings and share with each other. The binding materials will help me create different instruction manuals for the different games and tasks.

My students, like other teens, live in a digital age. However, through the use of games and manipulatives, inquiry and exploration become tangible, accessible, engaging, and memorable.
