Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember being in Spanish class? Do you remember doing a variety of projects to understand the culture? My students have not had the opportunity to learn another culture besides their own. So I am opening the doors so they can understand another culture by doing cultural projects.
I teach Spanish at a small, alternative high school.
The school is located in an impoverished, inner-city community. Many of my students have encountered many obstacles in their educational process, but overall they have come back to school to take control of their own lives and prepare themselves for a better future for themselves and their children. My students are eager, creative, strong-willed and motivated to learn another language and its culture.
My Project
I am asking for tissue paper, glue sticks, glitter glue, dough, construction paper, markers, sequins, etc. so that my students can create magnificent projects for "El Día de los Muertos" (Day of the Dead). Students will learn about "El Día de los Muertos" and how many the Hispanic culture honors a deceased person. Students will create a marigold garden, make sugar skull replicas, make papel picado (cut-out paper), and overall work together to create a class altar that will commemorate deceased loved ones or someone they honored who passed away. This project will help students learn how certain cultures deal with death, and they will be able to compare how they honor the dead with the traditions of other cultures and compare it to their own culture.
Understanding culture is very important when learning another language.
With the "El Día de los Muertos" (Day of the Dead) project students will think about the perspectives and practices that shape and influence the culture. They will be able to compare the traditions of the Hispanic culture to their own.
