My Students

My students are pre-engineering students and architecture students interested in applying their math and science skills in a hands-on learning environment. As their teacher, I am always searching for new and innovative ways to keep them up to date in this world of ever adapting technology.

We are currently looking to add modern tools and materials that will expand our learning of how objects are designed.

We will also study the machines and processes used to improve our human designed world.

My Project

Three dimensional printers or rapid prototyping machines are not new to our society, but they are now becoming a common tool. I would like to teach my students how 3D printers work by building a few from kits with them.

Students will learn how the X, Y and Z axis parts of Cartesian coordinates relate to the functioning parts and coding of a 3D printer.

The printers we will be assembling will help them design and create rapid prototypes from 3D CAD drawings as well as learn how this technology can be applied to different areas and materials.

The concept of understanding how Cartesian coordinates relate to all parts of a machine allow scientists to create machines that can print DNA and surgical parts as well as to let astronauts print spare parts in space as needed. The field of 3D printing is always growing and it is important for students to have an understanding of how these tools work and how they can improve our human designed world.
