Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in an inner-city school where students walk up to two miles each day to school. If it is raining or snowing students choose to stay home. Making school into a place students enjoy coming to each day will help motivate them to come each day. It is challenging to find students who have experienced the creativity of math. As a geometry teacher, I have the flexibility to link math to art and the world around them through creative hands-on projects.
Students in my class are developing a growth mindset to help them with problem-solving by making and learning from mistakes to become better students.
I teach that struggling is a wonderful thing and not everyone's answer has to be the same. I incorporate projects to assess students' learning but also give them a chance to be creative and use their imagination.
Many of my students are not only learning new topics but also a new language. Students learning a new language can benefit from more visuals and bilingual resources so they can learn new information quicker.
My Project
Students are tired of worksheets and notes. Math is not interesting or fun because everything is done two-dimensionally with pencil and paper. Current methods do not inspire creativity and students are disengaged the moment they see another worksheet. The pick up their phones instead of calculators or go to YouTube instead of geogebra. Some don’t show up at all. These materials will help students to actively engage with their hands in the classroom. Working together with classmates they will model various geometry situations and learn from their peers.
When students actively create and engage in their learning they retain more information and create positive learning memories; they put down their phones and pick up new knowledge.
We will be doing projects including calculating how a homemade shape will change in size, resulting in a keychain or magnet. They will create educational books to share with the younger students, reinforcing our skills while also engaging the younger students throughout the city. There will be opportunities to create bridges physically through projects and metaphorically through working with their peers and sharing with younger students in the city. I ordered books that promote motion in the classroom and clipboards to use as we learn.
