Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Gifted and Talented enrichment classes for four different schools, in the grades first through fifth.
My classes consist of diverse learners from various socioeconomic statuses.
Some of my students are from low-performing schools and are very excited about their enrichment class, where we can do hands-on activities in addition to the monotone intervention and repetition that usually takes place. This is usually the only time where they are asked to be creative and develop their talents.
My students do not always come from homes where they are told that their futures are bright and they can become anything they choose. It is my mission to educate them about all the possibilities that await them and to nurture their talents.
My Project
The students I serve sometimes gets extremely excited about one subject matter and starts to obsess about it. This has happened with one idea which emerged last year. My 3rd-5th graders have become obsessed with underwater life and the idea of creating or own underwater community in aquariums.
Please help me realize these students' dreams!
The students have already made the budgets for their aquarium, they have started researching sea-life, and each group will be in charge of their own aquarium.
I pull out students for the gifted and talented program but this project will help enrich the lives of all of their classmates as well. My GT students will create a presentation of their aquarium (in Google slides) and bring their finished aquariums to their classrooms to educate their peers.
