Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher at a public school. Many of my students have never been out of the neighborhood let alone out of the state to see the ocean. We have visited our state zoo which has a wonderful dolphin exhibit and my students enjoyed it immensely. We recently studied habitats and my students loved the ocean habitat the most.
By having an aquarium in the classroom, my students will be able to see the creatures and plants grow and live. It would provide an experience they may not get otherwise. My students will help in being responsible for the care of the aquarium and its contents. They will feed the fish and make sure the water level is adequate. They will be able to look at the thermometer to make sure the water is warm enough. They will learn new vocabulary words and they will understand the connection between scales and gills. Having this aquarium in the classroom we will be able to further our research by learning about food chains, population changes, life cycles, and habitats.
To bring this project to life, I am requesting plants, fish, blue gravel, and a 100 piece aquarium fish puzzle. First graders are already interested in animals. In school with this aquarium they will have the unique experiences of seeing up close what they have just read in books or seen in the movies. You will be able to boost their understanding of the water biome and the interrelationship between animals and water!
