Under the Microscope

Help me give my students glass slides, coverslips, and micrometers to make their own slides and measure structures under the microscope.

My Project

I teach in a large urban school district with a diverse student population. Many students are English language learners. My students have accepted the challenge of an Early College program where they have the opportunity to earn college credits during their final 2 years of high school. My students' passion and excitement have led many of them to continue their studies at 4-year colleges all over the United States. We prepare students for this undertaking through a writing-intensive curriculum where they learn to use the academic language of each discipline.

The materials in this project will help my students create their own microscope slides as they explore materials in our science classroom.

Glass slides, coverslips, and micrometers will allow us to make slides from fresh samples of plants and mushrooms. Micrometers will help us estimate the density of stomata on a leaf and the sizes of various structures.
