My students need a variety of sentence-building activities and games, like 2 puzzle games and instant sentence tiles to help improve their writing skills.
One question that my first-graders ask me on a regular basis is “What is a sentence?” While it seems simple, it can be one of the most challenging things to teach.
I have a diverse group of students who love learning English.
Whether they are native speakers or learning it as a second language, the students that I am lucky enough to work with have a passion for it. As they become more proficient readers, our focus shifts more towards writing. In order to write good, clear sentences, my students need experience constructing sentences and understanding the various parts of speech.
My Project
The resources that I’m asking for are specifically designed to give students the experience of physically constructing sentences. The different parts of speech are color-coded to help students easily categorize them. Students can physically arrange these parts, reading them for understanding, making sure that their sentences make sense. Working with a partner, words can be rearranged, added, and deleted to try and make sentences sound better. Students can build upon simple sentences, adding adjectives, adverbs, and conjunctions to make them more complex and interesting.
My students will literally be able to take a hands-on approach to writing as they work towards a greater understanding of just what makes a good sentence.
These resources will function as an important bridge between reading the sentences of others and writing good sentences of their own.
