Uncovering the Food Chain - Owl Pellet Dissection

Help me give my students hands on experience at looking through an owl pellet to determine what has been eaten, by classifying the bones, fur and other elements that won't digest.

My Project

This activity gives kids the hands on experience at viewing what an owl eats by examining what can not be digested. Students get engaged and sometimes grossed out by pulling apart an owl pellet and finding the bones, fur and other parts of their prey. The excitement at seeing their faces as they research and classify each item leads to them remembering the key concepts of predator- prey relationships. It also reinforces the skill of sorting and graphing items by using the scientific method of gathering data to prove their hypothesis.
