This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students have limited prior knowledge of the world around them and spend most of their time reading books that are outdated. They are far behind their peers both academically as well as in their exposure to the world. They rarely get to dream and discover beyond their four walled apartments. They lack grade level vocabulary and fluency which impedes their comprehension. As a result, we have students who are reading far below their grade level which impedes their ability to problem solve, write to communicate effectively, and to speak with rich vocabulary.
Most of my students have been diagnosed with autism, oppositional defiant disorder, ADHD, and emotionally disturbed.
While, some are motivated to thrive and succeed others need someone to lift their self-confidence so that they can start to dream of success. I teach in a classroom where there are more "I can'ts" than "I can". Our school serves children who come from low socio-economic households. In our school, 99% of our students are on free lunch and some are in shelters.
My Project
Help our students uncover a world of possibilities through the pages of magazines that are current and exposes students to a world they can only dream of. These magazines will engage them and motivate them to read since they are reluctant and expose kids to topics that peak their curiosity. It will provide us with 21st century learning tools that will hook our student into reading and learning since, we lack the resources necessary to guide our children in uncovering the mysteries of the world around them. These magazines will provide us with a treasure chest of articles and stories that will help our students discover themselves as a reader
