Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Who cares about history? It is what most fifth graders ask. Students need to see connections between their own lives and those of historical characters in order to find history interesting and memorable.
My fifth graders attend a Title 1 school.
Our students are primarily Hispanic, with over 60% on the free and reduced lunch program. Many of my students are in the Gifted and Talented Education program (GATE). All of my students are challenged to extend their learning limits and they usually rise to that challenge. They are eager to learn when presented with intriguing, relevant concepts that are rich in complexity.
My Project
By having a class set of Chains, students will be able to learn American History standards as well many reading/language arts standards. This book is full of figurative language and rich vocabulary. It includes primary sources as well as a look at the Revolution from multiple perspectives. Students can relate to the character since the main character is in their age group. They will read about colonial life, as well as major events that led up to the Revolutionary War. The author does an incredible job of taking the reader on a journey through history in a way that students will be so caught up in the excitement and suspense of the story that they won't realize they are "doing schoolwork". It is a pleasant deviation from the typical curriculum for teaching reading and history. This one book allows multiple subjects to be integrated in a meaningful way.
Students need to experience history, not just be told about it.
This book will allow students to do that. It will help them realize that the past, present, and future are all connected. They will also see how reading, language, writing, and history are all connected. Hopefully then they can understand where they fit in and how they can make their own mark on history.
