Un 'locking Confidence Before Moving to Middle School

My Project

Research has proven that one of fifth grade students' main fears about transitioning to the middle school setting is not being able to get their lockers open, in addition to a whole slew of other worries. At a time in a student's life already riddled with uncertainties of different kinds (biological, social, etc.), schools have a responsibility to provide environments where students can be, and feel, successful. As a school counselor, I can help make this happen through a program aimed at fifth grade students.

As part of a larger experience, providing students with combination padlocks to practice on will allow them to start the next year much more confidently in their new surroundings.

Lockers are a direct source of tardiness and missing important instruction, and indirectly related to overall academic achievement. Addressing this need to learn how to operate a combination lock correctly will put students ahead of these pitfalls.

In addition to the locks, other aspects of this program will feature visits to the middle school, games in which they can play to become acquainted with their future teachers and subjects, and how to manage their time better so they feel less overwhelmed with an increase in workload. Please help in helping to set my students up for success!
