Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are ETK students. They are four years old and starting elementary school for the first time. Most have never been in a classroom nor in an environment with other children of their age. This experience is very exciting for them, but quite overwhelming at times. Therefore their teachers are there to facilitate their learning and to help iron out those difficult times.
To see the world through the eyes of a four year old, it gives a glimpse of innocence and new discoveries.
These little scholars are so curious and enthusiastic about learning. They want to show others what they have learned. They love to be praised and acknowledged. School is where they socialize, work and play, which is a central part of their world.
My Project
ETK classrooms are required to provide outdoor playing and learning time. However, the weather in San Fernando Valley can get quite hot. Since school starts in August, we have longer periods of hot weather. Students still want to go outside, wether to paint some mammals, splash some reptiles at the water table, or roll playdoh into nutricious food.
Umbrellas can provide an escape from the sun.
The canopy that is being used doesn’t move. So the sun still can get one side of the outdoor learning area or the other. Outdoor umbrellas are mobile and they have a tilting mechanism. They can be manipulated to give the protection from the sun rays. Students will realize that they are just like tiny little trees. Except when the sun moves the “shadow”, we can move our little trees.
