Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a low socio-economic town where the resources are very limited. The majority of students didn't even have access to personal ipads/tablets/laptops. Luckily the school was able to provide them to get them on their way to a successful distance learning.
They are a beautiful group of intelligent 2nd graders, that are eager to learn.
Their favorite thing in learning is being able to interact through meaningful discussions both with the teacher and each other. I see them on the screen and the excitement of being back as a class is shown in their wide smiles and wide-open eyes. As sad as it is, seeing each other has a small sense of normalcy. They are the class you dream of having and the class that hurts when the year ends. Please help to make this distance learning come with a bit more happiness than just logging on and talking.
My Project
Distance learning has been challenging, however my students and I have been working it to the best with what we have. I have a vision though on how to make it great! Ways to keep them interested, ways to make things almost feel normal. Imagine being at home looking at a screen typed up worksheets with as much excitement as can be made with color added. But for my class one of the biggest part of learning is missing. That is our carpet time and chart paper organizers that display their thinking. Yes they can interact with the slides but how do you interact with the teacher the way we always did. Well here's our way...
Imagine it, a virtual classroom that feels as close as can be to the realdeal.
With these resources, I can post up chart paper on my wall, have a live presentation of it with a class discussion. Displaying their answers/ideas/thoughts for all to see as the teacher writes then while they watch. Not just listening...But real time visuals! We don't all learn the same way, so how can we as teachers expect them to learn just staring at worksheets.
