Ukuleles for Our Middle School

My students need hands-on experiences to keep them interested in learning music, and a classroom set of ukuleles would do just that!

My Students

Our Middle School is part of an independent school district within Taylor County, Kentucky. There are about 400 students in our school between 4th and 8th grade. We are a Title I School and 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

Many of my students are of low socio-economic status and would never be able to afford lessons on an instrument, such as the ukulele.

Having a classroom set of ukuleles would give them a wonderful opportunity to experience something new.

My Project

My plan for these ukuleles is to give students the basic understanding of chord structure in folk and pop music. Once the basic chords are mastered, they will be able to use the ukuleles and other classroom instruments to create arrangements of songs they have chosen.

I hope to inspire creativity and pride in a project they can call their own.

I envision solo and group projects that will eventually push them beyond the basic chord structures and into learning melodies, as well. It is my goal to empower students with the love of music and the joy of performing.
