Ukuleles for Days!

My students need ukuleles to help them better understand music reading. The cases are to protect the instruments and then a ADH insurance in case they are damaged.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a Title I school where most students are low income, that has been open two years as the music and choir teacher. The program focuses on DLI; students learn Spanish half of their school day and English the other half.

My students love music class, are excited to learn, and passionate about playing instruments, but unfortunately many cannot afford to buy one themselves.

I am a firm believer in hands on learning and believe this is the best way for information to stick. When every student has an instrument this helps the information to stick.

My Project

My students love to play instruments. Many are interested in playing guitar and ukulele is an easier beginner instrument that students can easily transition to guitar from. Sadly, there is neither a budget available for our school to buy ukuleles nor do my students' families have the budget to afford to buy one themselves.

I want my students to be passionate about music and to continue learning music even when they aren't one of my students; ukulele is a perfect way to kindle the desire.

The high schools my students will go to do not have a ukulele program, but they do have guitar. I want them to be well prepared. I would also eventually like to add a guitar program at my school for middle school, but starting with ukuleles is a great way to build rapport and interest.

I am also requesting cases to keep the instruments safe when the students are not using them and when we play at community events. My goal for my school is to be well-involved in the community and my ukulele program would be great for this.
