My Students

"What's the difference between a ukulele and a chainsaw? You can tune a chainsaw!" I want my students to learn how to tune the ukulele and play it too.

My school is an urban school in Massachusetts.

80% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. Students come from a very diverse background ethnically and socio-economically. I teach seven hundred and forty-four students per week including several special education classes. We have five African drums, eleven guitars (very old and do not work), boomwhackers (donors choose donation), and a DJ board (donors choose donation). I do not have enough drums and guitars to teach an entire class, even if two students share! We are in desperate need of instruments for students to learn how to read music and play instruments in general music class.

My Project

My students (especially special needs) will have a weekly lesson on the ukulele. They will learn how to play an instrument, read music, and learn songs that are appealing to them. Because ukuleles are relatively cheap, I am hoping that students will become interested in them and purchase one for their own recreational use.

All of my students will have access to using the ukuleles for a semester each year. They will meet Music state standards that are otherwise very difficult or impossible to meet without instruments. Your donation will help the special education students work on fine motor skills and help meet other goals listed on their IEP.
