My students need three ukuleles to realize that they can make their own music.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are young kindergarteners with a thirst for knowledge. They love to explore and observe the world around them. They love to play all sorts of games. They especially enjoy learning games with small objects (such as beginning sounds boxes or rhyming boxes.) They enjoy building things and making all sorts of creations. They often ask me to take pictures of their block creations or their masterpieces in the sand table, so that we can all remember their amazing achievements.
My students are budding scientists, writers, mathematicians, artists, and so much more!
They love a challenge, and they especially enjoy working with others to tackle these challenges.
My Project
My students love to make music. They don't wait for scheduled music time. They enjoy singing, dancing, picking up rhythm sticks, and using egg shakers. I recently acquired a few ukuleles to use in my classroom. My kids love them. I am learning to play the ukulele and am sharing this process with my students.
I want my students to know that we can all find joy in making music.
It doesn't matter if you don't think you can do it or if others tell you that you can't do it. We all start at the beginning and we are all learning each day.
We use music in my classroom in so many ways. We begin the day by singing the "Good Morning" song. We sing about numbers, the days of the week, the letters and letter sounds. We sing about friendship and about the world around us. Music makes us happy. Music also helps us learn and retain new concepts. This project will not only promote a love of music, but by singing along with the ukulele, I will be improving my students' oral language development.
These three ukuleles will give more students the opportunity to see themselves as musicians. One really great thing about these ukuleles is the fact that they are the perfect size for my young Kindergarten students! This project will help my students realize that musical expression and creativity are just as important as everything else they are learning in school. I hope that this will lay the foundation for increased self esteem as they move on to their remaining school years.
