My Students

I teach elementary and middle school students in an urban school. My students are full of energy, creativity, and talent.

My students love music!

I teach in an area with a lot of economic hardship which limits my students’ access to instruments, private lessons, and technology. However, it in no way limits their love of music and potential to compose and perform. They truly enjoy playing all the instruments in the classroom, learning to sing and play their favorite songs and write their own music.

My Project

I play guitar in my classroom and all of my students can't wait until they get big enough to start learning guitar themselves. Due to the size and difficulty of the guitar that's not until 6th grade and I really don't want to make them wait so long! With ukuleles I can get them strumming and playing as early as 3rd grade. Ukuleles are the perfect size for younger students, no trouble for the even the smallest students to hold correctly. The strings are easier to press down requiring less finger strength, and since there are only 4 strings students only need to press down one string at a time for most chords, not the 3 and 4 finger combinations required for a 6 string guitar. In all ways the ukulele is much easier and more accessible for younger students. Not only will young students be successful with ukulele, but the skills they learn will make them more successful later on guitar.

Ukulele teaches so many music skills: beat, melody, harmony, rhythm, and tempo!

Students learn melodies, learn different chords and strumming patterns, and learn to sing and play their favorite songs in a ukulele jam session. Besides teaching so many music skills the ukulele also helps students develop eye hand coordination and finger dexterity. Skills that help with writing, sports, art, and transfer to other musical instruments.

Help me get my youngest students strumming, singing and jamming away with a set of classroom ukuleles!
