This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend an inner city school in Ohio with an ever growing enrollment. All of the students in the school qualify for free and reduced lunch. Many of my students must travel through areas of urban decay to get to this neighborhood school. But even though they face over-crowding, limited classroom resources and other circumstances that are beyond their control, they still come to school everyday with a strong desire to learn.
My students have a desire to express themselves and always shine when given the opportunity to do so.
They are a group of fantastic personalities who love to sing, dance and make music!
My Project
My students are are in need of instruments to use in music class. There are not enough age appropriate instruments for my older students to use without having to share. This means multiple students trying use the same instrument within a single class period. Many of my students have specifically expressed an interest in learning to play a sting instrument.
With two Mitchell MU40 Ukelele classroom 10-packs, my sixth grade students will be able to learn to play a string instrument without having to share the instrument through the class period.
This will allow them the time they need to improve their own individual music skills.
