This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My musicians are kind, enthusiastic, and proud of everything they do! We have an extremely diverse and involved student body, motivated by teachers who are constantly seeking to challenge their minds.

Most of my students have to overcome cumbersome home lives, learning disabilities, and social-emotional barriers, but there's not a day that goes by that they don't do it with grace!

Our music program serves every K-5 student enrolled on campus, giving them the skills that will enhance their ability to read, write, problem-solve, socialize, critically think, and improve both fine and gross motor skills.

With your support, we can ensure that our students continue to evolve in a 21st-century music classroom, stay safe, and get the most out of their music education!

My Project

Before COVID-19, our 4th and 5th graders enjoyed learning to read music and apply their skills on the recorder: a small flute similar to the woodwind instruments found in band or symphony orchestras. Students were always ecstatic for the opportunity to produce their own music through rigorous practice and performance. However, learning recorder means using breath to produce sound - which is impossible to do effectively while wearing a mask. Due to the pandemic and the mechanics of the recorder, we have to come up with a safer way for applied learning on an instrument.

As a solution to this predicament, we'd like to introduce ukuleles to the classroom - It's a great way to stay safe while creating music both individually and alongside peers!

Learning an instrument provides a diverse musical education to all students who come through my classroom, strengthening both musical literacy and social-emotional skills. With our 16 new ukuleles, we plan to have 2 students per class assigned to 1 instrument for think-pair-share learning - students learn best from their peers! We can maintain safety protocols such as being masked, distanced, and show students how to sanitize between uses. Finally, we can put on an end-of-the-year performance to showcase what they've learned. These ukuleles will be loved and appreciated by students for many years to come!
