This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Do you remember the excitement of playing recorder in music class in elementary school? Imagine how exciting it would have been to be taught to play a ukulele in school as well!
I would like to start a ukulele program for my fifth grade students.
Research shows that leaning to play an instrument improves all areas of learning including reading and math and improves test scores.
My students do not get to start on band instruments until they are in 6th grade. I would like to give my students the opportunity to learn a string instrument in fifth grade. This will help the students who choose to join band in 6th grade with the skills that they will need on their own instruments but also give the students who will not be in band a chance to learn an instrument.
I believe that the ukulele would be a great instrument for my students. It is used in a lot of popular music now, so the students will be excited about learning it. It also is similar to the guitar, but smaller and easier for beginners, so the students could go on to learn the guitar.
If I have a class set of ukuleles I could also start an after school ukulele club or add ukulele to the 5th grade musical performances and honor choir performances.
This is a project that I had funded through Donors Choose 10 years ago, when I taught at a different school. My students loved learning to play ukulele. It was a great addition to my music program. These instruments are durable and would be used for many years to come. Those same instruments are still being used today at that school. I would love to be able to give my new students the same opportunity.
