My Students
I have the privilege of teaching music to over one thousand students at three different schools! My students range from first grade to fifth grade. We sing songs, compose music, study music from cultures around the world, create rhythms, and learn to play instruments.
Music has the power to make students shine who do not do well in a regular classroom setting.
I see confidence built every day in my students through music. One of my schools is a high poverty school. 71% are on free and reduced-price lunch. They have little or no access to musical instruments at home. I would like to give them the opportunity to shine. This same school is a STEAM academy. The A in STEAM stands for Arts. I would like to see them represent the A with confidence, enthusiasm, and pride!
My Project
I would like to teach my 5th grade students to play the ukulele. It is a fun instrument to play and easy to learn! The four nylon strings are easier to master than the six steel strings of the guitar. By learning 3-4 chords, students will be able to play countless songs. Ukuleles are relatively inexpensive. Students who express interest in owning one after learning it don’t have to worry about the price.
Playing the ukulele has many benefits, such as developing hand-eye coordination.
It also encourages self-discipline and patience. It leads to stronger social skills because students work together to master the chords.
