My Students

Do you remember playing Uno and Chutes and Ladders? Or Oregon Trail and Math Munchers on PLATO computers? I do; it has been 16 years, but I still remember the skills I learned in elementary school! This is my wish for my students--to remember how fun my class was and the lessons taught therein.

My kids are so fun!

They are constantly asking me "why" and "how come" questions, which inspires me to think of innovative ways to "answer" them... I am a new (former Kindergarten teacher) Third grade teacher at a predominately Black, Title I school in Virginia. It is a small school, serving a neighborhood of low- to middle-income families. My class this year is pretty special to me-they are the SAME students I had when I started teaching at my school three years ago! This is my first year teaching Third grade and I basically came into an empty classroom with nothing to "inherit". So, I am starting all over again as far as building my classroom. It is very difficult to request materials and resources because of a perpetually tight budget; I am constantly finding creative ways to make lessons fun...

My Project

This year, Virginia school systems are required to incorporate learning stations into their curricula. Learning stations basically consists of breaking one's students into 3 or more groups during a lesson, each group doing a different activity. After a certain time period (usually 15-20 minutes), rotations occur until all students have completed all stations. This gives students an opportunity to encounter a variety of activities within a period of time. I am asking for a variety of Math, Science, and History playing cards, board games, hands-on games, and computer games because these are the types of activities that are attention-grabbing, encourage team-playing, enhance analytical skills, and sneak in learning at the same time!

Your help in funding this project will ensure that my learning stations are more interesting and captivating for my children.

Not only will you be helping my children, you will be helping ME, as I "build" my new classroom! My children now and in the future will enjoy the plethora of activities for each subject, which means learning will be had! :-) We appreciate it...gracias.
