This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are mostly from low-income families that live in a gang-infested, poverty-stricken environment. They face many challenges on a daily basis. My students struggle with feeling safe, whether they are sitting on the front porch or walking to school.
My job is to make them feel safe at school as well as to give them hope that they can overcome any situation.
Every day, I encourage my students to be a catalyst for change in their school, home, and their environment. My students know that they can overcome anything if they try.
My Project
I have been an instructor in my school since 2007; this was the last year that we received new social studies text books. It is now 2018, and I am still teaching from these outdated books. My students need to know that history is made every single day.
With Junior Scholastic Magazines, I can teach my students about current events and link the past to the present.
When my students read about current events in their Junior Scholastic Magazine, they will be able to make connections with the past and current events in history. They will also be able to annotate the text and identify those key events that they have questions about or need clarified.
