My Students
Ug! We've been living with an industrial old and ugly rug. The addition of a large concept carpet will brighten up the classroom and add a host of learning opportunities throughout the day. The children will be much more ready to learn if they can sit and feel comfortable.
Aloha from Mr. Shearer's first grade class!
My class is full of eager first graders who are ready to learn and work together in large and small groups. I have many students with different skill levels from high to low, so I need to be able to work with them in large and small groups. My school is located in a rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children of Native Hawaiian or Pacific Island ancestry.
My Project
I am a new first year teacher with an old classroom that has not been refurbished in many years. I spent the whole summer cleaning and setting it up to make it a place where I wanted to spend my day, as well as making it inviting to my young students. The problem is that I do not have a clean place where the whole group can gather for reading and sharing. The old carpet is so threadbare and dingy I do not feel good about my students sitting on it.
In addition to brightening the room, the new carpet, with its alphabet letters and numerals, can be used in so many activities as we incorporate those features into our various experiences.
The comfortable pillows will be used as a seating area during small group literacy activities.
Because of their ages, my students spend a lot of time on the floor, sometimes more than any other place.
The addition of this carpet would bring a wonderful touch of color and quality to our classroom. This carpet would upgrade my old classroom and turn it into a newer more effective teaching area. It will complement my efforts to make this classroom a safe and welcoming home away from home for my little ones.
