Remember the first time we tried to ride a bike? After a few falls, most of us found our balance and then rode on. Learning to ride the unicycle is a challenge at least one step greater. The process involves finding in one's self the ability to temper extremes, identify one's strengths, and put the abilities of one's body to use. Students reach deeper to find new sources of courage and come to terms with what natural laws exist (physics, gravity, etc.) The 5th and 6th grades fully engage themselves in this process. I teach Games and PE for grades 2-8, and my mission is to cultivate the individual's unique gifts and establish good teamwork. In developing a student's physical skills, few activities have the reach and scope of the unicycle. Every year our school, SunRidge School of Sebastopol, is invited to participate in regional events called the "Medieval Games" and the "Olympeace Festival." A dozen schools attend, and it is a highlight of the year for the 5th and 6th grades. We are asking for two unicycles for our school's use and in preparation for these events. Funding this proposal means supporting avant-garde methods and innovative approaches to physical education. Thank you very much for your generosity!
