I teach in an elementary school that is a 4th/5th-grade building in a small town in central Illinois. I teach two different classes of 5th-grade students reading, language, writing, spelling, and science. In my classroom, my students enjoy a variety of activities including hands-on and collaborative learning in order to help make the information real and interesting to them while giving them a reason to practice.
Our students are a wide variety of students at our school with over 60% of our students receiving free lunch.
Because of this low-income percentage, our students often require additional help and support to help make their learning valuable and real-world to them. Our teachers work hard to collaborate in order to help all of our students achieve at their highest level.
Our community is very supportive of our schools, but lately, because of lower levels of state support, many local businesses have cut back on individual assistance for classrooms. In order to continue some of our learning projects, we have had to look to other support to help us out.
My Project
I teach language and writing skills to two classes throughout my day. Writing can be a very difficult task for fifth grade students, but by providing them with some creative and necessary tools, the writing can become fun.
My students can benefit from stressing less over writing and typing if they have some beneficial aides to help them out.
Typing from a notebook on a flat surface can be very difficult, but the typing stands can help them be more successful.
Writers need a variety of tools in order to be successful writers. My students sit at round tables and when they all have their writing tools they can get very messy. The pencil holders can give each table a place to keep their tools that are easily accessible for all students at the table.
