Since the day I started teaching in Milwaukee, my students have faced various challenges and obstacles, whether in or out of the classroom. Many of these students face different types of situations on a daily basis. As a result, obtaining their education can be even more of a challenge at times. Keeping this in mind, it's important for me to provide my kids with an educational experience that is relevant, intellectually stimulating, and engaging.
My students have a sense of eagerness and desire to showcase their talents and abilities, but don't always have the resources they need to do so.
Many of them come from circumstances that put them in situations where they don't get a "fair shake" or a chance to showcase their skills and talents to the fullest. It is my hope that by getting projects funded, my students will have the resources needed to get past those circumstances and display their full potential.
My Project
The main focus in my classroom this year is promoting a positive sense of classroom climate, cohesion, and community. I teach all of the 10th graders at my school, and in my classes, we have brainstormed ways we can do this. One idea that came up was to start "Bowtie Tuesday." We discussed how we often have members of the community and local businesses come into our school to tour the campus. We also talked about how students don't dress formally in an educational setting on a regular basis. When I asked students if they would be willing participants in this initiative, hands went flying in the air, but were soon followed by an overwhelming sense of "I'd love to, but I don't own any bow ties, and I don't have the money to go buy one."
With your support, students will be able to participate in a class-wide initiative that promotes professionalism and classroom community.
Students will be able to dress professionally and classy without having to worry about obtaining their own bow ties, and will be able to do so with a sense of pride. Many of our students have expressed interest in post-secondary options that will require them to dress in a formal manner, whether it be business ventures, attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities, or other campuses that require a formal dress; this grant will help prepare them for that lifestyle.
I understand that this project is out of the norm, and isn't the typical "pencils or paper" type of request, but this is something my students want, so I'm asking for any support to make this happen.
