Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with meaningful learning experiences in music.

Imagine walking into music with a brand new instrument, ready to become the next Louis Armstrong.

Playing a musical instrument is a big deal to my students. From the moment they get their first recorder in third grade to the point where they get their first band instrument in fourth and fifth grade, learning how to play an instrument is a very exciting experience. It is a joy to see them create music and discover all the sounds they can make with their instruments. They feel like they are on the top of the world when they get to use one of the few music stands we have and pretend they are a professional musician with their music right in front of them. It is a truly magical experience.

My Project

We have two working music stands in our music room for students to use while playing an instrument. Currently students place music on the floor when playing the recorder and propped up in their instrument case on a table while playing their band instrument. This is not a desirable location for music when trying to play and read music at the same time. Music stands hold the music at the right height so students can properly hold their instrument while reading the music.

Having music stands helps set-up students for a successful start while learning how to play a musical instrument.

Stands help keep students organized and ready to learn. They ensure they can see and read the music at a proper height and adjust to fit each student.

My students currently run and fight over who gets to use the music stands. Having a music stand makes the students feel like a real musician and it empowers them to work and try harder. I never knew how important a music stand was until I started letting my recorder students use the two stands I have for band. It was as if they felt more comfortable and focused with their music at a good height. Many students have said that the music stand makes it easier to practice. I would love to have more music stands for students to use and be successful with.
