My students need 6 Spanish book sets to support literacy in their first language and motivating them to participate in an environment that honors the richness of their bilingual experience.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students and families are ready to learn and ready to succeed, supported by strong community involvement and pride in their families, heritage and school. Our school population is 95% Hispanic, with nearly 41% learning English as a Second Language (ESL). Families and teachers prepare students for the pathway to college and career, which is key for our students: the average income for residents within the school's zip code is significantly less than the state's average.
Despite, and often because of, such challenges, our students eagerly participate in both bilingual and monolingual curricula, along with many other opportunities for student growth including technology and engineering projects, ballroom dance, and after school wrap-around programs.
Our attendance is excellent because our students come here to learn and succeed.
My Project
I teach a monolingual 6th grade class in a bilingual school and this is the first year of English-only education for some students who have previously been in a bilingual class through the fifth grade. Most students are fluent in both English and Spanish. They are very good at sharing their gift of bilingualism with me, as I learn to speak more Spanish.
I am asking for 6 Spanish book sets to enhance our classroom library, Our classroom library does not reflect the diversity of the students' experiences, knowledge, and needs.
We do not have any dual language books nor do we have any books written in Spanish. We need books written in Spanish for several reasons: to support developing readers, to acknowledge each person's culture and experience, and to provide for students who are fluent in English reading and need a challenge to go beyond the average grade level expectations.
