it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Middle school is a crucial time in our lives. It is a make or break point for many students. Growing up in poverty, single parent homes, and a neighborhood promoting drugs and violence is a huge obstacle for anyone to overcome let alone a adolescence going through puberty. These are the lives of many of my students.
Regardless of circumstance, my students shine like diamonds in the rough.
They bring their best effort forward no matter what happened the night before or the morning of. They have an appreciation to learn and grow academically and socially. Even though fear may cloud them, they search to rise above. They aspire to be doctors, lawyers, nurses, veterinarians, scientists, etc! I know they deserve it and I strive to help them make their dreams come true.
My Project
CPS is moving forward with the Hybrid model where some students will learn in the classroom while others will be at home. With this model the teacher will move from classroom to classroom while the student stays put. My desk is now a cart. My school provides each teacher with one laptop; however, in order to see both my students’ faces and present the work/video/example, I need two screens.
In my 7 years of teaching never did I need 2 computers to interact with my students.
During the times of Covid, teaching and learning has been isolating and challenging to say the least. With a second laptop I can increase our interaction by being able to see their faces as I deliver instruction. So much of learning is non-verbal and all of that understanding disappears when I talk only to a screen that has a series of math problems on it.
This laptop will be the first I have ever owned as an educator. I am thankful to my school for giving me one to use as I teach but often files are lost, computers are reset and all my plans and prepared work also disappears. I loop with my students, I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade consecutively year after year, having my own computer will help me maintain my records and be a stronger better teacher for my students.
