My students need an iPod Touch to work in small groups creating projects, or to independently improve fluency skills in math and reading.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"My job is to not be easy on people. My job is to make them better." -Steve Jobs (CEO of Apple) With the innovation of technology growing everyday, it is a shame to be in a classroom of students without the resources to include them in these new developments. My job is to provide the needed tools.
My students are primarily English Language Learners who desire to become fluent in English and competitive in their academics.
They come from a school whose population is about 81% Hispanic, 12% Black and 5% White and where 90% of students are eligible for a free or reduced-price lunch (NCES 2008-2009).
The students at my school need a lot of attention perhaps as a result of the little they receive at home due to overworked parents/guardians. When they come to school, they are charged sponges ready to receive positive reinforcements and praise for their accomplishments. The students are eager to expand their knowledge and share their experiences with others. They aspire to attend college and be successful citizens in our community.
These students do not have a lot of experience with different technologies and therefore are unaware of the impacts that gadgets can have on their education. The opportunities students can have with technology can teach them more about the real world.
My Project
I am hoping to have my other project also asking for an iPod Touch to be funded. If this is the case, this second iPod Touch can help me share the love of learning with a smaller ratio of student to iPod. Students can then work in a second group filming presentations, creating podcasts, illustrating stories and challenging the other team.
I have taken Professional Development trainings on how to effectively use the iPod and other Apple products in the classroom. My students will learn how to self-monitor their fluency in voice recordings and in math facts through "apps", work in collaborative groups to create quality productions, and navigate through applications simulating authentic tasks that require technology and research.
Donations to this request will change the environment and culture of learning in my classroom.
Students will broaden their experiences with the help of a small, yet powerful, gadget. As Steve Jobs put it, it isn't my job to be easy on my students. I can make them better by challenging them to step up to the technology and be responsible for their learning and the potential of gain that can be made with the right tools. Students will see that knowledge is built from investment they put into it.
