Two Birds, One Stone: Learning Math and Having Story Time

My Students

The students in my classroom LOVE reading. These students come from various socioeconomic situations. Their family structure varies from 2 parent homes to students in foster care. Our entire community is considered rural.

Our school serves students in grades 3-5.

If you drive by our school after hours, you will find at least one teacher "Burning the Midnight Oil." Many of the businesses which employed a large number of our parents have closed in the last few years. Breakfast is now free to all of our students, and many of them also receive free lunch. Despite their home situations, these students deserve the very best we have to offer. Their parents are sending them to us knowing we love each and every one of them.

My Project

Each day, my students join me at the back of my room for a read aloud. Sometimes we are reading a chapter from a book, sometimes a picture book for fun, and sometimes a picture book to introduce a new standard.

I would LOVE for my students to have a place to sit other than the cold, hard floor.

The rug I have chosen will allow us to have math lessons on multiplication and division, patterns, prime and composite numbers, even and odd numbers, and more while also providing a nice, comfortable place for students to sit while I am reading to them each day.
