Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This year, I will be teaching three classes of AVID 9th, 10th, and 11th grade. AVID is a college preparatory class which is an elective option for students who will be the first members of their families to be able to attend college. The school is in a very high risk area which has the second highest crime rate in a very large inner city.

Unfortunately, many of these students have never read a book which they truly love and want to talk about. Most have not even ever read an entire novel. I would love to share my love of reading with my students who have chosen to break away from the area in which they live and do something for themselves. Additionally, by purchasing a classroom set of the same novel, they will be able to discuss with their friends areas which they enjoy and areas which confuse them.

I would love to share with my students 30 copies of Stephanie Myer's popular novel Twilight. This will give them a chance to learn to love reading. Additionally, this novel will increase their vocabularies. Both skills will aid them towards their goal of college.

With your help, you will make it possible for my students to learn to appreciate reading and improve their vocabularies. This will enrich their lives and make their dreams of college more attainable.
