My Students

I have taught primary grade children for the past twenty-nine years in the inner city of one of Chicago's most challenging neighborhoods on the south side. This year, I am the STEM/Health teacher for grades pre-k through fifth.

The students at my school are hard workers and are eager to learn; they are so happy being back in the classroom full time after a year and a half of remote learning.

I also teach an after-school program to first and second grade girls called "Sistas of STEM" and an after-school program "Number Ninjas" for primary grade students. Both programs were developed by me.

My Project

As the STEM/Health teacher at my school, I am required to spend some of my instruction teaching health topics to my students. We have spent the first part of the year discussing ways to live a healthier life style by the foods we consume and ways to keep our minds healthy.

My tween classes (fourth and fifth graders) are at that stage where they are in dire need of a refresher course on personal hygiene.

I see their classrooms first thing in the morning, and it's very apparent that a lot of them have skipped personal hygiene before coming to school. Some of the children are very critical of each other and sometimes tease those who aren't as fresh smelling as they could be. As part of our upcoming unit on hygiene, it would be nice to be able to give each one of them a "Clean and Fresh" hygiene kit to be used at home before coming to school.
