Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Within the NYC Public school system is District 75. District 75 houses the highest needs special needs students and oftentimes, these students also fall into the highest needs economically disadvantaged category. Over 90% of my students fall into this category. We are a 12-month program, where students attend year-round to receive services.

My students are part of the largest school district in the country (the NYC DOE) and fall into the highest needs category.

For years, I have poured my own money into my classroom, but it is not enough! I have reached out to local community members and collected used and refurbished computers, but they do not meet the requirements to run modern software.

I teach grades K-8 and a total of 9 classes, a daily lunch club and a weekly positive behavior intervention club as a reward for students. All students would have access to these resources! That is why today, I am reaching out for global support to help our highest needs students get an equal chance to succeed! We truly need your assistance to level the playing field. Many students come from homes that do not have Internet access or technology, further increasing the achievement gap.

My Project

Though I teach technology, my room is one of the few rooms that does not have a Smart Board. Imagine trying to teach students for the first time how to video edit or code, where they need to follow instructions and replicate an action, without being able to see it. It can be incredibly frustrating for them and a near-impossible task for me.

There is a HUGE need to get monitors in place of a Smartboard ASAP so students will be able to follow along from day 1!

As someone who ironically trains teachers in instructional technology, I do not have access to this technology myself! Smart Boards and Promethean Boards can easily cost $7,000+. My idea is to instead purchase a large flat screen (non-touch screen) TVs and control them with a laptop so I can immediately have my students following along for a fraction of the cost.

I was able to find 50'' monitors that are only $199 each! Given the price point, I plan on utilizing 2 monitors as digital displays of student work and one for whole-class instruction (where all students will be able to see what is going on and replicate it). This will keep students motivated and excited to learn!

The schools who can access the latest technology because money is not a factor and the parents who can afford to provide the same at home will always have a significant advantage. Let's try to even the playing field! With your help, I can continue my mission of introducing and building upon STEM skills from a young age to establish a love of learning and technology! Thanks so much, friends!
