My Project

I feel that science is often neglected in elementary grades though it could be used as an opportunity to practice the core subjects like reading and math.

It occurred to me that I lacked the tools I needed for my kids to get hands-on after I had 20 kids taking turns using a total of 2 magnifying glasses to look at celery stalks.

As you can imagine it took quite a long time! A class set would be incredible. The balance beam has clear buckets so kids can observe materials up close! The cylinder set would be so great not only for talking about things like volume but comparing different liquids. Finally, the thermometer would be an incredible resource. This one is jumbo, built to last, and the kids can use it too!

I tried to select a sprinkle of different science books; habitats, climate, weather, environment, animals, and so on. I want science to be a larger part of our daily routine. I think these books and tools will enrich my current and future classes in the vast and incredible world that is science.

I know being a new teacher means you will need a lot of things; I just started my incredible teaching career a few months ago and I would love all the help I can get! Just this week I bought celery, food coloring, and jars so my students could observe how plants transfer nutrients. It was worth every penny! Every day my students eagerly shuffled into class, stuffing their backpacks into their cubbies; speed walking to their desks, and pulling out their recording sheets to see how their celery had changed. It was incredible to see their excitement, to hear their thoughts, and even their collaboration discussing why things were happening. Science is truly beautiful!
