My Students

Everyday I am amazed by the determination I see in my students to succeed. I can only imagine what it must be like for them, arriving in a new country, not knowing how to communicate even their most basic needs, and being thrown into a school with expectations that can seem daunting to native English speakers.

I teach students who have left war torn countries, students who are fleeing natural disasters, all hoping for something better.

I am privileged to be able to help these students be and do better for themselves and their families.

It is my responsibility to level the playing field and help these students develop their English language skills so that they are able to access the academic content and reach their potential.

My Project

My students need access to interactive language activities and tools for communication. We will use these tablets daily to provide practice with the fundamentals of the English language. My students need intensive experiences with the English alphabet, letter sound identification, sight words, and writing. There are so many great resources for building English language skills, such as interactive read alouds that allow students to hear fluent English speakers, as well as listen to the stories in their native languages, improving comprehension skills. Apps that allow students to translate an idea, allowing their ideas to be heard. As well as resources that allow students to practice speaking in English without the fear of public embarrassment. With these tablets I will be able to tailor instruction to my students' needs, which will increase their achievement. We would be using the tablets during our modality centers where the students focus on Reading, Writing, Listening, or Speaking, as well as during the times when I am modifying and supplementing their core content, allowing me to quickly provide them with visuals or modified text so that they are able to learn with their classmates.
