Turning Pages: Building a Library Kids Love to Visit

Help me give my students comfortable, inviting seating that brings our Enchanted Forest-themed library to life — a space where they can relax, read, and fall in love with books.

My Project

Our students are bright, resilient, and full of potential. They attend our elementary school on the West Side of Chicago, a richly diverse community where many families face economic challenges. Despite these obstacles, our students show up every day ready to learn, support one another, and grow. Our school community includes a beautiful mix of learners, including children receiving special education services and English Language Learners who bring a vibrant array of cultures, experiences, and languages. They are welcoming, friendly, and kind-hearted — and they deserve access to the same enriching, high-quality educational resources as any child. Unfortunately, our school has been without a librarian for over ten years. While we are thrilled to finally welcome a new librarian this year, our current library space is in critical need of transformation. At present, it contains no furniture — no bookshelves, no comfortable seating, and no inviting areas for children to explore and read.

We envision a library that feels like magic, a place where students want to be.

Our goal is to create an “Enchanted Forest”-themed library that sparks imagination and fosters a love for reading, especially among our youngest learners. To help make the space truly inviting, we’re requesting beanbag chairs and a comfy storage benches with built-in book storage — flexible seating options that will give students a cozy place to read while also keeping books accessible and organized. These additions will support student choice, comfort, and engagement as they explore the world of books.

Our dedicated staff is ready to roll up their sleeves, volunteering time to clean, paint, and transform the space into a welcoming haven. We believe every child should feel excited to step into a world of stories — and with your help, we can make that dream a reality.
