My Students

Students come to my class daily wondering what we will be doing today. They love to get their hands on the engineering and technology tools and concepts that we are learning.

Fifty percent of our students live at or below the poverty level, and many students come from single-parent families.

School data shows that we are gaining more economically disadvantaged students each year, but we are currently not receiving Title I funds to support them.

Our student population is pretty diverse with about thirty percent of our students being white, thirty percent being Hispanic, thirty percent being African-American, four percent Asian, four percent mixed race, and the other two percent representing other cultural backgrounds. These students thirst to learn about skills that they might not otherwise get to experience. Our classroom mission is to provide these learning opportunities.

In my classroom, we use robots, computers, and everyday items to teach concepts in engineering, the engineering design process, AutoCAD, and other topics of interest to students. Our goal is to provide students with a head start on high school courses that they might find interest in and want to pursue in the future.

My Project

This project is to replenish the materials that we use for our graphic design projects. We will use the vinyl transfer paper to make transfers for t-shirts and jackets, the sublimation paper will be used to help us make mugs, tumblers, and other items. The tape dispenser will make it easier to get our tumblers taped up and a cleaner transfer. The smaller paper will be used for making mugs.

During our first semester students are able to learn about entrepreneurship, making, and graphic design through creating logos and designs of meaningful things to them.

This gets them engaged in what we are doing and allows them to express themselves more openly. I encourage them to explore their interests before deciding what to make and on their final design. Having these materials will allow us to continue making and creating, while exploring the science behind some of these techniques.
