My Students

We want to take food waste from our lunchroom and turn it into nutritious food for the plants in our organic garden. We are promoting the importance of knowing where your food comes from and are learning about the full cycle that goes into growing your own food -- from compost to ripe tomatoes.

Our students are caring and dedicated to help make their community a better place by helping those in need.

They are high achieving and curious academically, which allows them to spend time making a difference in the community. Students are excited about pursuing this project as it teaches other students their age and younger how to make responsible decisions about their health.

My Project

Students will collect food scraps from the lunchroom and put them into our new compost tumblers where they will mix the scraps with brown materials such as leaves or straw. They will monitor the compost until it is appropriately aged; at that point, they will spread the compost around the plants in our garden and watch as the compost does its magic and helps them grow into healthy vegetables that they will cook with or donate to the local food pantry.

This project will teach students about how much food we actually throw away and waste.

It will also teach them about the process and ease of organic garden. The produce from our garden is used to teach students about making healthy eating choices. A large portion of the produce from our garden is also donated to a local food pantry to give fresh produce to families in need.
